From Furnace to Flame: A Journey In Glass

Over the past year, some new stuff has been added to the shop and some things were attempted.

This small kiln was added to use as a glass warmer and garage for rods and mosaic chips. It is very useful with rods, canes, and chips prone to thermal shock.

This micro furnace, that runs off a Hot Head, was added to the shop to experiment with making canes. I have not been happy with it so far, but Iā€™m going to give it a try again. I was hoping that I could use my 96 COE glass to do small scale blow glass, but that did not work.

We ended up with a huge slab of soap stone given to us for free so that it could be repurposed. We cut it up to make it manageable to move. It is still waiting to be turned into a large marver. I did make a small 6 by 10 inch marver for the lampwork bench.

I also added this blow torch for use in the Hot Shop to keep glass warm without having to go back to the Glory Hole.
