400+ Beads From Ribe

From Furnace to Flame: A Journey In Glass

Some of My Beads

Between Stella Nova 21 and Gulf Wars 22, I made a lot of new beads. The bulk of them were based on photographs that were sent to me, selected from the Southwest Jutland Museum. There were over 400 beads pictured that I tried to recreate.

I organized the beads into strands based generally on color. Blues, blacks, reds, greens, yellows, and whites. Many were variations on designs I had already done others were new to me. Many of the beads I made were based on extent finds that were flawed and reproducing the flaws helped me to better understand their creations. Sometimes, my flaws were unintended. Often, a flawed bead has more character than those perfectly executed and, as evidenced by the number of flawed beads in the catalog in period, even a flawed bead had value.

Failed Bead

The beads were photographed and cataloged with the side by side of the photograph of the extent find. This challenge resulted in a huge increase in my portfolio of beads. It also gave me a better understanding of what the constituent parts needed to be.

While I continue to research beads, my goal is to now begin to produce the glass cane to make the beads and to also work towards making drawn beads.
